A fellow nestie of mine made her own laundry detergent and raved about how great it was, so I decided to jump on the bandwagon and try it out! It cost us a total of $7 (not including gallon jugs) and will make around 7 gallons of detergent, possibly more. So it's the cheapest laundry detergent I've ever used! Usually we spend around $14 a gallon so hopefully this will save us alot of money, plus the homemade stuff uses the same amount during each load!!! Anyway, here's the recipe. I have clothes in the washer right now so I'll let you know how it goes...
2 Cups Borax (found by laundry detergent)
2 Cups Washing Soda (found by Borax)
2 Cups Grated Soap (I used Ivory and it was 2 bars worth once grated - I was told that Fels Naptha works great too)
1 Quart Boiling WaterMelt grated soap in the boiling water.
Mix soap mixture with the Borax and washing soda. After that is well mixed, add 2 gallons of water. I got 3 1-Gallon Containers and stored the other 2 in the closet. Shake very well before use and use 1/4 Cup per laundry. (We found out that if the air temp is below 65 or so the mixture congeals and is difficult to shake.)
I used 2 cups of baking soda because I couldn't find washing soda, I did find another girl on a blog who used baking soda and said it worked just fine so we shall see!!
I've also decided to try and dye some of my blacks that are faded with Black Rit Dye to see if they go back to normal. I have some great work pants and long sleeve tees that are faded and I hate to throw away, I figured it was worth a shot!!

I've been meaning to try this, but haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for posting the ingredients. I'll look for your results post!
You can also make a powder detergent if you want you use 2 cups of soap finely grated, 1 cup of washing soda and 1 cup of borax. You store this in an air tight container and you use 2 tabelspoons per load. This takes up a little less space. Also I can't find washing soda around here either but you can purchase it online. Washing soda and baking soda are different. Washing soda is a sodium carbonate and baking soda is a sodium bicarbonate. So it may be a little harder on your clothes. Let me know how it turns out!
